Let’s be honest: the idea of walking into a counseling session can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve never done it before. You might wonder, “Will I have to lie on a couch?” “Will I be judged?” “Am I supposed to cry the whole time?”
The short answer? Nope.
If you’re curious about what really happens behind the door of a counseling or coaching session—especially with someone like me—this blog is for you. I’m Jenny Stevens: a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, a personal and professional coach, and someone who has sat on both sides of the therapy room. My goal is to take the mystery out of the process so you can walk in feeling informed, empowered, and maybe even a little excited.
First Things First: It’s About You, Not a Script
Every session starts with where you are. There’s no pressure to come in with the “right” things to say. Whether you’re navigating divorce, stuck in a career that no longer fits, grieving a loss, or watching your kids leave home and wondering who you are now—this space is for you to be real.
In our first meeting, we’ll get to know each other. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, what you want to get out of our time together, and we’ll set some goals. Think of it like co-creating a roadmap toward the version of your life you want to be living.
What You Can Expect During Sessions
Here’s what does happen in a typical session with me:
Clarity
We’ll take the swirl of thoughts and feelings you’re carrying and start sorting them out. I’ll help you name what’s going on, clarify patterns, and begin to connect the dots.
Real Conversation
No couch. No Freudian silence. Just real talk. I bring an honest, direct, yet compassionate approach. I’m not here to sugarcoat, and I’m definitely not here to judge. I’m here to walk alongside you—with tools, insights, and straight-up truth.
Tools & Strategy
Whether I’m wearing my counselor or coach hat (often it’s both), I’ll offer strategies you can start using right away. You won’t just feel heard—you’ll feel equipped. That’s my goal.
Support for Change
Change is hard. If it were easy, you’d already be doing it. My role is to support you through the messy middle—the place between where you are now and where you want to be.
Counseling or Coaching—What’s the Difference?
I offer both, and it’s normal for people to use them interchangeably depending on where they are.
- Counseling is often about healing—working through past pain, trauma, or challenges.
- Coaching is more about forward motion—clarifying goals, boosting confidence, and taking action.
Both are grounded in deep listening, honest feedback, and strategic support. And both start with you.
For Teens, Adults, and Everyone in Between
I work with a variety of clients—from teens finding their voice, to adults reimagining life after a major shift. Regardless of age or stage, one thing holds true: when you feel safe, supported, and seen, change becomes possible.
Credentials That Back It Up
I don’t just care deeply about people—I’ve spent decades building the skills to support them:
- Masters in Professional Counseling – Argosy University, Chicago
- B.A. in Health and Fitness Promotion – Texas Christian University
- Mediation Skills Training – Northwestern University
- Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor – State of Illinois
- Fellow – 2023 Collaborative Divorce Illinois
This journey isn’t about me. But it helps to know you’re in good hands.
One Last Thing
You don’t have to be in crisis to come to counseling. Sometimes, we just need someone who gets it, who listens without an agenda, and who can shine a light on the path ahead.
If you’re ready—or even just considering—taking the first step, I’m here.
